‘Vibrations in Steel Replace Vocal Cords’ is a sculptural exploration of the bodily connotations of metals such as iron and its alloy steel; considering how processes of casting and welding both relate to and effect the physical body. After exhibiting work at ‘DOK’ in Edinburgh, the last remaining building from Henry Robb Shipyard in Leith converted into art gallery, I realised my granddad had worked on this same, now defunct, shipyard as a Shipwright. What began as an investigation into this personal connection lead on to further consideration of wider issues of gender, labour, class and reproduction.
