Vast experience of travel has allowed Yasmin to immerse herself in different social environments and to view everyday life from different perspectives. Yasmin’s work holds a strong narrative and is often portrayed through the use of strong colour and expressive mark making.
The artist invites you to engage and to position yourself within her private world and the skewed reality her work inhabits. The work displays both humour and poignancy in equal measure, straddling the familiar and alien simultaneously.
My art work is an expression of my life experiences. I’m heavily influenced by travel and this comes across in my paintings all the time. I get inspired by the people that I meet and their quirks. Unusual places also interest me. I have spent the last two years travelling through America and living in Canada while working in Aquaculture. This experience has really broadened my mind and it’s certainly left a lasting impression on me.
I think it’s important for me to document my experiences, for me painting is almost like my version of taking a photograph or telling a story, I want to capture and remember the emotional and comedy value of that specific moment. I love learning about folk stories, new cultures and why people hold on to certain cultural traditions.
I have recently moved back to Scotland and I want to share my art work, it’s almost like sharing a diary with strangers but I feel like people can relate to my paintings on some level.
