This project is inspired by Iceland and the folklore that lies within the country’s fascinating culture. I started this project with the intention of concentrating on character design and the placement of characters into landscapes.
I was lucky enough to travel to Iceland a few months ago and I used this trip as a form of primary research; taking photographs and sketching the landscapes using watercolours and pencils. I had a previous perception of Iceland before experiencing it in person and was utterly taken by surprise when I got there. The town of Reykjavik is modern and colourful; boasting a rich variety of street art.
From my Iceland photos, I was able to collate a colour palette that reflected the moody atmosphere. I wanted my project to be a combination of fantasy and realistic reportage from my experience there. I combined my watercolour sketches with digital painting to create concept art for my book ‘The Icelandic Elves’.
I use a drawing tablet and Photoshop to create my digital paintings, I am also fond of traditional methods of image making using watercolour, acrylic paints and pencil and ink.
