Puppet Animation Scotland presents the 2018 edition of the manipulate Visual Theatre Festival, its innovative festival of international, award-winning visual theatre, puppetry and animated film. Returning for its eleventh year, the festival will be presented in leading venues across Scotland and England and features one world premiere, two European premieres, four UK premieres and one Scottish premiere with productions from Belgium, France, Germany, Israel, Italy and the USA, as well as a strong selection of Scottish work. We are particularly pleased to collaborate with the Institut Français d’Ecosse to highlight the work of four acclaimed French ensembles throughout the festival. In addition to programming dynamic, inspiring work from around the world for our large and enthusiastic audiences manipulate also empowers Scottish-based performers to develop compelling puppetry, visual and physical theatre, nurturing their initial creative ideas through our popular and successful Testroom and Snapshots: Artists@Work programmes; this year highlighting the work of seventeen leading and emerging companies and practitioners.

For the first time this year all the animated film screenings are presented together on the festival’s Edinburgh opening. We have scheduled the work of an eclectic mix of UK-based film-makers, international festivals and leading animators to provide for our audiences a dynamic and informed snapshot of contemporary world animated film. The Edinburgh Short Film Festival presents a selection of its favourite animated short films from those submitted over the past five years. The Bristol Festival of Puppetry provides a collection of shorts which reflect the expertise and experiences of women in puppetry and film today. Expect your senses to tingle as the Punto Y Raya Festival, a Spanish festival which fosters experimentation in visual arts using pure form, colour, motion and sound in abstract animated film, presents a selection of award-winning shorts.
