Jupiter Artland Foundation has today announced the first artist commissions for their 2019 programme, with further details to follow in the new year. A collaboration with emerging South American artist Daniel Lie will open the Spring season with internationally renowned artist Joanna Vasconcelos, returning to Jupiter Artland to unveil her permanent commission in the summer – a 9-metre long swimming pool installation in the sculpture park’s Italian Garden. Just 20 minutes outside Edinburgh, Jupiter Artland, one of Scotland’s most significant arts organisations will host their third Campout in August 2019 comprising of live music, performance and films in the grounds of the sculpture park.
Daniel Lie is an Indonesian-Brazilian born artist based in Sao Paulo, who’s work spans the disciplines of performance art and sculpture. Using “time” as a starting point for his production, Lie develops works which question tensions between science and religion, ancestry, the present, life and death. To highlight the passing of time, Lie works with organic matter subject to decay such as plants and fungi. Daniel Lie’s commission for Jupiter Artland will open on Saturday 18 May 2019.
A striking permanent new work by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos will launch Jupiter Artland’s summer season on 20 July 2019. Vasconcelos, known for her large-scale installations that decontextualize and subvert everyday objects into surreal works of art, will create a 9-metre long swimming pool installation. Encircled with vibrant hand-painted Portuguese tiles, the work will depict symbols and signs that illustrate the historical mysticisms of Bonnington House. The pool will be set within the perimeter of Bonnington House’s Italian Garden and visitors will be able to pre-book time slots to swim in the pool throughout the month of August.
The Jupiter Campout will return for its third year in August 2019 following the success of this year’s ROMANTI-CRASH! Bringing together groups of all ages and backgrounds the overnight art campout will feature experimental and immersive performance art experiences. Catering will be provided onsite, with an optional sit-down dinner and further details will be announced in early 2019.
Jupiter Artland celebrated their Tenth anniversary season in 2018 with two landmark commissions by artists Phyllida Barlow and Ollie Dook, as well the launch of their anniversary publication titled The Generous Landscape: Ten Years of Jupiter Artland. The publication includes contributions from artists in the collection including Phyllida Barlow, Andy Goldsworthy, Antony Gormley and Charles Jencks and is available to buy on the Jupiter Artland website.
