Highlights include a special screening of the definitive Ghostbusters documentary, a season devoted to avant-garde master Alejandro Jodorowsky and Q&As with directors Ashvin Kumar (No Fathers in Kashmir) and Simon Sheridan (Everything – The Real Thing Story).

12 years in the making, Cleanin’ Up the Town: Remembering Ghostbusters charts the extraordinary achievements made by the filmmakers in creating the 1980s blockbuster. GFT’s special screening of the documentary on Tuesday 21 January will be preceded by a late night showing of the original Ghostbusters movie on Friday 17 January.

Director Ashvin Kumar will visit GFT for a Q&A following the screening of his new film No Fathers in Kashmir on Wednesday 29 January. Audiences will also have the chance to quiz director Simon Sheridan and original The Real Thing band members Chris Amoo and Dave Smith after the screening of Everything – The Real Thing Story on Monday 20 January: the new documentary about the first all-black British band to hit Number 1 in the pop charts.

GFT will also show a preview screening of The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, the adaptation of Miguel de Cervantes’ picaresque novel that has taken director Terry Gilliam more than 20 years to make. The screening will be followed by a recorded Q&A with Gilliam.

Alejandro Jodorkowsky

Theatre’s Cinemasters season will be devoted to Alejandro Jodorowsky, who is considered the founding father of cult cinema, renowned for his violently surreal images and hybrid blend of mysticism and religious provocation. Jodorowsky’s El Topo, The Holy Mountain and Fando y Lis will be presented in newly restored 4K versions.

With awards season approaching, the independent cinema will also bring some of the big contenders to its line-up of new releases, including Little Women, Jojo Rabbit, Uncut Gems, Waves, Bombshell and The Personal History of David Copperfield.

GFT will continue to play host to some of the UK’s most exciting film festivals and seasons. The BFI Musicals! strand continues with The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Calamity Jane Sing-along and Cabaret. Five titles will screen as part of Fokus: Films From Germany, including the multi award-winning Gundermann and Different From the Others, first released in 1919 and believed to be the first positive depiction of a gay relationship on film.

The Pay What You Decide initiative will continue in 2020 with weekly opportunities to watch quality independent films and support indie cinema. Audiences can watch the film and then decide how much they would like to pay. January’s Pay What You Decide titles include Amanda, Seberg, Adam and Evelyn and Midnight Traveler.
