Back in October of 2016, Horror enthusiasts were given the chance to experience what was thought to be a once in a lifetime opportunity. John Carpenter, a legend of Horror and man behind one of the genres best films of all time treated Edinburgh Usher Hall to a night of him and his music. The show named Live Retrospective was comprised largely of his best-known film scores such as action thrillers They Live and Escape from New York, as well as the infamous, spine-chilling sounds of Halloween. With the help of his band and faithful synthesizer, Carpenter transported a completely mesmerised audience from film to film, reminding everyone why he is a master of both Horror and composition. A once in a lifetime opportunity it certainly felt like. Until this year…

Carpenter announced in July that Scotland is a stop on the European circuit of his Anthology Tour. A show dedicated solely to his composition work in film will take place on October 19th. He will play live his original scores from all his best loved productions that have shaped the Horror genre and brought joyous fear to so many. This show will be performed in a slightly different style venue as Carpenter swaps Edinburgh for Glasgow, performing in the Barrowlands this October. A welcome swap as Usher Hall, as beautiful a setting as it may be, did not feel entirely suitable for the audience listening to the almighty sounds Carpenter and his band generate.

So what can be expected from this show? If it is anything comparable to his Live Retrospective tour from 2016, then simply the movies, the music and the man. Carpenter was front and centre at Usher Hall, his band playing in the background while he dominated with his synthesizer. Blasting out all the classics from his most poignant and enjoyable films, composed in large by him. Carpenter is celebrated as an icon not only of film directing, but of composing film scores that have marked audiences for over forty years. His work has a lasting impression that changed the scope of both Horror and modern cinema. So both diehard Horror nuts and those just there for a good old fright can be guaranteed a night to remember.

What makes this show increasingly impossible to miss is that it takes place on the same date as the UK release of the new chapter of Halloween, starring Jamie Lee Curtis and supported by Carpenter. What better way to follow a night of listening to the music of the renowned film plus Carpenters other works than going to see this much anticipated direct sequel to the original. It cuts out all of the substandard movies that have come before it and picks up forty years after that memorable night. For many this is extremely welcomed news as one tries to forget the failings of the many confusing sequels Halloween has! On top of this, Edinburgh’s The Cameo will be showing the original Halloween on October 10th with a special video introduction from the master himself. With all of this to look forward to October 2018 is one for all John Carpenter & Horror lovers alike to free up immediately!

Anthology Tour is on the 19th October 19:30 at Barrowland, Glasgow.
