Winter Windows is back! This special creative project conceived by Underbelly in 2014 as part of Edinburgh’s Christmas encourages Edinburgh’s young and budding artists to showcase their talents to residents and visitors outside of the classroom and in our streets and community hubs.
This year, Winter Windows will be displayed in West Parliament Square outside St Giles’ Cathedral and continue in four locations around Edinburgh: Great Michael Rise in Newhaven, Ratho’s North Street, Royston Wardieburn Community Centre in Pilton and St Patrick Square just off Clerk Street.
Each stained-glass window is designed around the theme of kindness. This year’s Winter Windows is working with the support of St Giles’ Cathedral and the City of Edinburgh Council department of Arts and Creative Learning.
All 37 winners received their awards at a special reception at the Festival Square Spiegeltent on Lothian Road in Edinburgh on Friday, 23 November.
The Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh, Frank Ross, said:
These artworks will be enjoyed by millions of people in our communities this winter. The festive display celebrates our pride in the creativity of our school pupils and it’s always a hugely popular part of Edinburgh’s Christmas. I think this year’s winners have outdone themselves and their Winter Windows look incredible. Well done and thank you to everyone for taking part.
Charlie Wood and Ed Bartlam, Directors, Edinburgh’s Christmas said:
Community spirit lies at the very heart of Edinburgh’s Christmas and what better theme to represent that at Winter Windows than kindness! All 37 winners produced artworks as stunning as they are inspiring and we hope communities around Edinburgh flock in to admire their endeavours. Congratulation to them all!
Winter Windows are on display around Edinburgh from 17 November until 26 December. Free entry.
