Avant-pop guitarist and songwriter David Longstreth, AKA frontman to New York’s Dirty Projectors, has been feeling rather mopey of late. Signalling a return to the project’s solo origins, Longstreth released a string of singles from the forthcoming album over the course of several months, of which ‘Up in Hudson’ is the latest. Each release shows a sustained exercise in introspective contemporary R&B, no doubt influenced by Longstreth’s brief stint writing for Kanye West and Rihanna, and almost certainly influenced by his recent breakup with bandmember, guitarist Amber Coffman. ‘Up In Hudson’ is by far his most expansive, telling, and fearlessly direct song, as he declares “love will burn out / and love will just fade away”, tracing a breakup right back to the roots of the relationship, backed by the pulsing of thick horns
