In terms of Inspiration, I have created a series of abstract portraits that are full of emotional energy. They are expressive and autobiographical in the sense that it depicts my inner psychological state as someone with bipolar affective disorder, the work is therapeutic, almost spiritual – I want to depict states of mind.
By contrast, I also work with ready-made sculptures. So, domestic items such as mirrors, frames, ceramics that I work into with media such as oil paint.
I think doing this project would really benefit my mental health, it is something I have wanted to do for a while. Hopefully my work can comfort some people who have been through the throes of mental illness. There’s also the sculptural aspect that is purely visual and all about enjoying art as the work tends to indulge in colour. I also enjoy aspects of abstract expressionism with pop art.
I also think that my art is a therapeutic distraction for someone who is experiencing ill mental health. It is highly colourful and expressive, therefore lifting spirits.
