Although ‘Avengers: Endgame’ seemed to have wrapped up the latest phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) very neatly, ‘Spider-Man: Far from Home’ is the official last entry in this phase. Having the responsibility of setting up the next steps in this massive franchise yet also trying to be a great stand alone ‘Spider-Man’ film is no simple task, yet thankfully ‘Far from Home’ manages to succeed despite its few short comings.

Set a few months after the event of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, the world is still recovering from what the film dubs to be called ‘The Blip’, (more commonly referred to as ‘The Snap’ from fans). Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is embarking on a trip round Europe with this school class, of course in typical comic book movie fashion a new threat emerges through ‘The Elements’. While in Prague Peter finds himself pitted against a water creature akin to something from Greek mythos, yet a new hero seems to emerge with Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). Peter must balance his love life and mounding pressure to be a leader while also once again, trying to save the world.

Of course, there is more to the plot, but depending on your knowledge of ‘Spider-Man’ outside of the MCU will impact greatly how you feel about the film’s narrative. If like me you are someone who personally considers themselves to be a huge fan of the web-swinger, you will likely see everything coming from a mile away.

Where this film shines is when it gets the struggles of Peter Parker spot on, the struggle of being an adolescent teen desperately in love with MJ (Zendaya) while also having to fill the shoes of his new Avenger role is all fantastic. Tom Holland once again is fantastic in the role, and at this point has certified himself as the best on screen Spider-Man we have ever had. The supporting cast are all enjoyable here too, Zendaya I still have reservations about due to the edgy persona her character seems to relish in, but whenever she is next to Peter they have fantastic chemistry awkward chemistry with one another.

The director Jon Watts really gets an opportunity to show some creative visuals here. Without spoiling anything, a scene in this film may just be one of the greatest scenes in any of these MCU films and even any ‘Spider-Man’ film.

This being the 23rd entry into this MCU, it is safe to say that if you weren’t on board before this film then you still aren’t going to be sold on this. The film is full of references to other films that sometimes can bog it down, and the script is incredibly exposition heavy in parts yet ‘Spider-Man: Far from Home’ is another good ‘Spider-Man’ film in a time that ‘Into the Spider Verse’ pretty much made it so it would never be topped.
