Critically acclaimed electronic duo Animistic Beliefs and media and performance artist Jeisson Drenth announce their debut live audiovisual (AV) show, Thức Tỉnh (Awaken). The must-see premiere will take place at Muziekgebouw in Amsterdam, as part of FIBER x The Rest is Noise Festival, on the 10th of January 2025.
As part of the evening, writer Eelco Couvreur will moderate a panel discussion featuring Animistic Beliefs and Jeisson Drenth. Following the discussion, the three artists will take the stage for an innovative performance that blends electronic music, live visuals, lighting design, and cutting-edge technology. Through this immersive experience, the trio invite the audience to explore multi-sensory worlds and awaken to new possibilities.
Inspired by pre-colonial traditions, Thức Tỉnh draws deeply from the rich cultural heritages of Mar’s Moluccan, Linh’s Vietnamese-Chinese, and Jeisson’s Pre-Columbian heritage. These influences shape the music and unfold across distinct sections, blending electronic and acoustic elements with dance, text, and poetry. Through drum machines, synthesisers, and evocative visuals, they create an ethereal space that challenges conventional narratives and celebrates the viewpoints informed by their experiences as queer people of colour in the Netherlands.
By bridging the past and future through a seamless fusion of traditional and contemporary art forms, Thức Tỉnh embodies a breathless rave energy. Mar, Linh, and Jeisson channel this spirit to collectively highlight stories and experiences that are too often absent from the Western cultural canon.
Thức Tỉnh is a compelling journey into the minds of three visionary artists. In this performance, the duo’s boundary-pushing soundscapes meld with Jeisson Drenth’s distinctive visual world of techno-spirituality, creating an immersive experience that transcends the visible and invisible. Beginning as an intimate exchange, the show transforms into a powerful reclamation of cultural roots, culminating in a rave that celebrates the complexities of migrant identity, and the emergence of new narratives.
Mar, Linh and Jeisson add:
The development of this new work is characterised by a new sense of vulnerability, more experimentation, the exploring of the potential of new performance techniques.. We can’t wait to share it with the world.
The premiere of Thức Tỉnh will take place as part of the eighth edition of the FIBER x The Rest is Noise 2025 on Friday the 10th of January.
