Celebrating the diverse ways artists engage with both natural and man-made surroundings, Amongst the Trees is the new exhibition presented by The Scottish Gallery this summer. Amid sculptures by Scottish artist Andrea Geile, The Gallery has curated contemporary and modern paintings and objects from both established artists and new talents.
Amongst the Trees beckons the viewer into unexplored realms, prompting contemplation on the interconnectedness of all living things. The works will be on display both inside and outside the gallery in their gardens, further playing with the interconnection between the natural and man-made. The enduring presence of trees throughout the history and culture of art is represented, having served as symbols, subjects and vehicles for reflection on humanity and our environment.
Andrea Geile is known for her examinations of nature and ecology through her art, exploring both urban and rural landscapes through sculpture, drawing and public art. Her sculptures will be celebrated in Amongst the Trees, displayed both in The Gallery, and in their outdoor space. Alongside Geile, The Gallery will present work by artists including Scottish Borders artist Sheila Anderson Hardy, Kate Downie and the Behrens family based in Fife, Edinburgh artist David Rae, and Pascale Rentsch from East Lothian. As renowned artist Victoria Crowe’s 80th birthday approaches in 2025, The Scottish Gallery has assembled a capsule collection featuring some of her early and mid-career paintings and prints offering insight to her evolving relationship with the Scottish landscape.
Amongst the Trees also pays tribute to philanthropist Hugo Burge (1972-2023) who, with his father, renovated Marchmont House in the Scottish Borders, creating a hub and community for artists and creators in the area. The exhibition includes rush seating from Marchmont Studios, and pots from Redbraes Pottery.
