After years away touring the world, the Olivier Award-winning godfathers of alternative cabaret, the legendary alternative rock trio Tiger Lillies celebrate their 30th anniversary with a triumphant return to the Fringe.
Based on the seminal 18th-century Beggar’s Opera, the band present a new song cycle swarming with highwaymen, thieves, jailers, pimps and prostitutes – a world of greed, crime, poverty and inequality. Expect immense beauty and outrageous comedy from the Grammy-nominated, street-opera trio.
With their dark and ecentric underground appeal, Tiger Lillies image and style is described as “the macabre magic of pre-war Berlin with the savage edge of punk”, and leaves no deviant theatrics unturned.
The three piece band consists of Martyn Jaques, Adrian Stout and Budi Butenop, who together create a magical daring threesome rock trio, who have invented a signature blend of chanson, opera, and Gypsy music which has been favourably recognised globally.
The world of The Tiger Lillies is dark, peculiar and varied, with moments of deep sadness, cruel black humour and immense beauty. This unique “anarchic Brechtian street opera trio” tours the world playing songs about “anything that doesn’t involve beautiful blonde girls and boys running at the meadow” to quote their founder Martyn Jacques
Recognisable achievements include winning two Olivier Awards – which they won for the cult hit musical Shockheaded Peter and the Grammy nomination for their album The Gorey End.
