‘Orbit’ is the fourth single from Scottish electronic duo Gefahrgeist (Fiona Liddell and Niall Rae) featuring Edinburgh rapper Conscious Route. A song of two halves, the first section of the song represents the Moon with Fiona Liddell’s haunting vocals accompanied by live strings and woodwind over a minimalist synth arrangement. The second half explodes into the Sun with Conscious Route’s lyrical ingenuity taking over with a punchy and driving electronic beat.

Gefahrgeist combines the different musical expertise of two of Scotland’s most promising musicians – Fiona Liddell & Niall Rae.  Fiona Liddell is a singer songwriter from Glasgow and Niall (Neel) Rae is a producer and bassist from Aberdeen.  Their debut single ‘Graceless’ was one of The Herald’s Top 100 Scottish Songs of 2020, and their next two singles ‘Nukular’ and ‘Parasites’ received critical acclaim.

Conscious Route is a rapper, MC, poet and singer songwriter. Born and raised in London, he moved to Edinburgh over a decade ago. Over his long career, he has worked with a long and impressive range of artists, rappers and producers resulting in an eclectic body of work. Following a hiatus, Conscious Route returned to the studio in 2020 for the critically acclaimed ‘Lost Routes’ album with producer True Note. Two of his more recent releases ‘Trojan’ and ‘Dragon’s Jaw’ (with Post Coal Prom Queen) were BBC Introducing Scotland’s Tracks of the Week.

‘Orbit’ is a downtempo electronic song with orchestral and hip hop elements. It was first composed by Niall Rae as an instrumental track, before Fiona convinced him that it needed vocals. This led to the birth of their collaboration as Gefahrgeist. The lyrical themes include politics, socialism and mental health.

As well as a stunning feature performance from Conscious Route, the track features gorgeous live performances from some of Scotland’s top chamber musicians: Violins – Fiona Liddell, Lissa Robertson; Viola – Sarah Leonard; Cello Graham Coe; Flute – Neil T Smith; Clarinet – Calum Robertson; Oboe – Luci Holland

LIVE GIG UPDATE: Gefahrgeist performed their first live gig at Hidden Door 2021. In 2022, the band are organising their first Scotland wide tour. Their next gig will be in Edinburgh and will coincide with the release of their physical EP, ‘So Fahr’ in December 2021.
